Post Box -Yew Trees House

Village Postal Service – Potential Loss of the Post-box

In recent weeks Shipton Parish Council (SPC) has become aware of a risk of partial loss of postal service to the village and possible removal of the post-box presently located at Yew Tree House opposite High Trees. Recent removal of the hedge surrounding the post-box has exposed the dilapidated condition of the box and the pillar in which it is housed, which now needs either repairing or replacing. The box is a “GR” model and therefore of historic interest to many villagers, but sadly it has rusted and is starting to leak. It is our understanding of Royal Mail’s presently preferred option to remove the post-box and pillar and make good the surrounding area. Such a loss would be of great concern to many villagers.

SPC has undergone a fact-finding exercise to investigate what options are available to repair or replace the box and to maintain the postal service, including clarifying ownership and responsibility for any such repairs. At the most recent PC Meeting, views from attendees were raised and discussed. It was agreed that a “Save Our Postbox” committee would be set up to further lobby villagers for their views. Several documents are available below, including a fact sheet, minutes of the PC meeting and a copy of correspondence with Royal Mail. In the meantime, SPC has asked Royal Mail to keep us fully informed of status of any plans to repair, replace or demolish the box and of any associated changes to the service, and to work with us to represent the views of the community their services cover.

For further details on this subject please continue to check this page and to use the Shipton Village Facebook site for continued discussion. Your views are valued and we’re keen to reach a consensus so that we can accurately voice our opinions to Royal Mail.
